The worst of these dreams-and the worst of my adulthood-I had late in the process of writing what would become “20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism” ( bit.ly/3gn2BlB). Airports and airplanes have throughout my life figured into my dreams-usually in an ominous if not disastrous sense. This sequence haunted me for decades and, of course, was horribly echoed on September 11th, 2001. I was just in time to watch the lead character, played by Richard Burton, bring a jet airliner down into a city skyline simply by staring at it. When I was a boy, I caught part of a horror/disaster film called The Medusa Touch at my grandmother’s house. The idea of an airline disaster goes back to old dreams and nightmares. Although it’s not particularly similar, this story reminds me of the Richard Matheson story “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.” Was this or the subsequent Twilight Zone adaptation inspiration, or did something else inspire the story?Īny similarity to that story (and the famous, subsequent adaptations) is a coincidence, though the setup is almost identical (a man with a fear of flying is on an airliner), so there may well be some unconscious borrowing going on. Michael: And then, according to John Gray, this book was such a big deal that judges used to require couples to read it before allowing them to divorce. There was a Las Vegas show, there was a board game, there was a CD-ROM with “role playing and punchy graphics,” according to USA Today, that cost 49.95 in, like, 1990s dollars. There was a syndicated TV talk show, co-hosted by John Gray and Cybill Shepherd. Michael: There's also a bunch of like, as a book, this has more just weird spin offs. The book ended up on The New York Times bestseller list for 200 weeks. And then a year went by, and then he was featured on Donahue. The author, John Gray, had published two self-help books before to no acclaim or notice whatsoever. It basically came out without any splash. Michael: This book was published in 1992. Michael: This is, according to some sources, the best-selling nonfiction book of all time other than the Bible, but then you get into the whole thing about Bible fiction. Peter: As famous as this book is and as much as the title sort of makes it clear what it's about, I don't really know anything about it. Michael: What do you know about a book called Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus? Not knowing which to bring back, he leaves both babies behind. Too perfectly: Kull cannot tell them apart. By the time he turns back, the changeling has already perfectly mimicked the human child. After laying the changeling in a human infant’s crib, the goblin Kull is briefly distracted from his task. But when the fateful night arrives to trade a human baby for a goblin one, something goes terribly wrong. To renew it, goblins must perform an ancient ritual involving the rarest of their kind-a newborn changeling. I can’t wait for the next one.” -Adam Gidwitz, author of the New York Times bestseller A Tale Dark and Grimm** Magic is fading from the Wild Wood. **The first book in an action-packed fantasy adventure series featuring witches, shape-shifters, and other creatures of fairytale and folklore, including two brothers-one human and one a goblin changeling-on a life-changing quest into the Oddmire. But if, like me, you've a soft spot for novels which are more squarely in that Vinesque territory, where a character with a secret past tries to gain greater insight into her role in terrible events from many years ago, and the way in which these events are suddenly a new threat to the life she's built from the ashes, then the Poison Tree does what it says on the tin. So if you're after a campus novel, then this really isn't it. They could just have easily been working in offices and/or theatres and events could have unfolded in much the same way. The fact that the central characters happen to be students when the back-story begins is neither here nor there. This felt much more Barbara Vine to me, which is also excellent company to be in. I saw no signs that the author was attempting to retrace Donna Tartt's steps. Not too sure where this could have arisen from, but it feels a bit unfair to me. I've read other reviewer which comparing it to The Secret History, yet feeling let down when it fails to measure up as a campus novel. As well as a story that carries you along, the writing is generously peppered with interesting observations and compelling description. I enjoyed this, and will certainly look for others by this author. SPOILER possibility.proceed with caution. Since murderers are a novelty, and Christy tells a good story, all the widows and young girls soon fall in love with him, including the pub owner’s spirited daughter Pegeen Mike. Christy Mahon, a young vagrant, enters an isolated pub on the coast of County Mayo and tells the locals he’s a fugitive, having murdered his own father in the family field with a single stroke of a spade. The premise of this once controversial play is a simple one. How can I help but love Ireland? For example, how can you not love a nation that values both popular theater and “Irish womanhood” so highly that a new comedy-with “scandalous” depictions of Irish women-can cause a riot? And, no, I don’t mean a “laugh riot.” I mean a real honest-to-Jesus in-the-theatre riot that lasted over a week, featuring toy trumpets, penny whistles, rotten vegetables, stink bombs, and the summoning of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. and, in a gift that keeps giving-there are some pages in the ARC where the words are missing or smeared in a “content TK” sort of way, which means that, come september, there will still be new material for me.Īlthough allie brosh is infinitely more talented than i will ever be-what she’s able to convey with just posture in her cartoons is exquisite-there’s so much of that RELATABLE CONTENT the kids are always talking about. I honestly don’t know how i was lucky enough to score an ARC of this, but it was exactly what i needed to get me thru another day of this dumpster fire of a year. I’m not going to post too many pictures, because you all deserve your own individual voyages of discovery, but FYI: the pictures i AM posting are from my ARC, which is in black-and-white-the finished book will be in full color. It is bigger, funnier, sadder and-for those of you hoping-it does have more dumb dogs:Īnd one diabolically clever dog. No spoilers, but since everyone wants to know-was this book worth waiting more than five years for? Sometimes all you can really do is keep moving and hope you end up somewhere that makes sense. Oooh, goodreads choice awards finalist for best humor 2020! what will happen?īacktracking to add this to my book riot challenge:įulfilling book riot's 2020 read harder challenge task: #4 Read a graphic memoir REREAD TO GET ALL THE NON-ARC CONTENT INTO ME. Navigating a range of topics, including coming out, dating, relationships and health, Vaneet shares his own lived experience as well as personal stories from others in the community to help validate and uplift other bisexual men. This powerful book is an extension of that fight. This experience inspired Vaneet to create the viral #BisexualMenExist campaign, combatting the hate and scepticism m-spec (multi-gender attracted spectrum) men encounter, and helping others who felt similarly alone and trapped. After spending more than a decade figuring out his identity, Vaneet's coming out was met with questioning, ridicule and erasure. Being a bisexual man isn't easy - something Vaneet Mehta knows all too well. Ultimately, I was left with one of the simplest organisational methods of all for this piece. They were new when I discovered them, regardless of whether they had been discovered by other readers days, months, years or even decades before. I didn't think there was much point to ordering them by publication date either. Most of them I read in that space of true discovery, from the age of nine or so to maybe seventeen or eighteen. I couldn't order them chronologically from when I read them because I mostly couldn't remember when I did. All were and are important to me in many different ways and for many different reasons. All the books I wanted to mention I remembered because they were great books. The first dredging of the deep sludge of my mind made it clear I was also unable to organise the books in any meaningful way. First of all, I couldn't possibly fit in all the significant books and authors of my childhood. Then I junked what I'd written, because I didn't like how it was coming out. A bit more got done during the long flight home to Sydney. I did a little more in a hotel in Washington D.C. I began writing it in a hotel in Vancouver. There were several false starts to this list, which I originally wrote for the journal of the Children's Book Council, USA.
